A tiny state sharing borders with Nepal,
Tibet and Bhutan. Gangtok, the capital, is situated at 5,047Ft
and 125kms from Siliguri. The country was originally home to the
Lepchas, a tribal people thought have migrated from the hills of
Assam, or possibly even from South-East Asia, around the 13th
century.
Until 1975, Sikkim was an independent
kingdom, although under a treaty which allowed the Indian
Government to control Sikkim’s foreign affairs and defense.
However, following a period of political crises and riots in
Gangtok, India annexed the country and Sikkim became the 22nd
Indian state.
The tiny Himalayan state is blessed with
pristine and unspoilt natural beauty. Resting in the lap of the
mighty Himalayas, guarded and protected by Mount Khangchendzonga
and the other towering mountains and sanctified by the age-old
monasteries on every hilltop, Sikkim presents a diorama of
diverse culture, religion, rich biodiversity, unequalled scenic
beauty, spiritualism and adventure. |
